Introduction
Police‑I Division functions as the cadre‑controlling authority for the Indian Police Service (IPS). It coordinates both domestic and foreign training programmes for police personnel and oversees the recognition of their distinguished service through awards such as the President’s Medals for Gallantry, Meritorious Service, Distinguished Service, Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak etc. The Division also exercises administrative and financial control over two premier Central Police Organisations: the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad and the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA), Shillong.
Subject Allotted
(A) Cadre Management of the Indian Police Service :
- Appointment of IPS officers through regular recruitment and induction of State Police Officers by promotion.
- Basic training of IPS probationers at SVPNPA, Hyderabad, followed by confirmation in service.
- Allocation of officers to various State cadres and periodic review of cadre strength and composition.
- Empanelment of officers from DIG to DG level for Central deputation.
- Maintenance of Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs) and handling of service and vigilance matters of IPS officers.
(B)Award of Medals to the Police Personnel :
- Recognition of outstanding service through awards such as:

- Medal for Gallantry (GM)
- President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM)
- Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM)
- Kendriya Grihmantri Dakshata Padak
- Parakram Padak
(C)Training of Police Personnel :
- Coordination of domestic training programmes through the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), including issuance of advisories to States.
- Facilitation of foreign training opportunities in foreign countries to acquaint personnel with modern policing techniques.
- Collaboration with international trainers visiting India for capacity building.
- Training of officers from friendly neighbouring countries including Nepal, Bhutan, and other SAARC nations at Indian police training institutions.
(D) Management of Training and Police Research Institutes :
